Athlete dies from MRSA, another infected, health authorities say

A high school wrestler died this weekend because of a staph infection and another team member is being treated for the condition, according to media reports.

Noah Armendariz, a 17-year-old Downey, Calif., resident, died at Children’s Hospital of Orange County from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. That staph infection is resistant to some antibiotics, and is spread from skin-to-skin contact.

The boy developed a rash and flulike symptoms shortly after he returned in June from a high school trip to wrestling camp in Lake Arrowhead, said his mother, Cynthia Magaña.

About a week after Armendariz became sick, another teammate tested positive for a staph infection, said Downey wrestling coach Miguel Soto.

The coach said he has asked remaining team members to report any rashes or afflictions immediately.

Magaña said doctors aren’t sure where her son became infected with the lethal bacteria.

“We’ll never be able to really pinpoint it,” she said.

Doctors at first thought her son had chicken pox, or possibly a reaction to the painkillers he was prescribed for a dislocated shoulder.

His health grew worse and he began having trouble walking, she said.

“He was shuffling around like an old man,” his mother commented.
